Party Hard on Family Literacy Day
Jan. 27, 2024 in Canada
This year Canada celebrates the 25th anniversary of embracing Family Literacy Day. The theme: Let’s have a family party!
Libraries across the country will host family-friendly story-time events, such as the Stories & Stepping Stones in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. Pointe-Claire Quebec will lead a Reading Challenge. In Hamilton Ontario, readers will be encouraged to invent a new ending for a family’s favourite book.
Up in Labrador Newfoundland a Church Hill Falls librarian describes the fun planned at their branch in this audio clip from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.
How is my family celebrating?
We dug out a few old journals (including the one pictured above) which the kids wrote when they were young scribes. My favourite is the Riating Book as is chock full of “klues … for mysterys”.
Like me, my kids never could spell for beans. But damn, look how they employed ellipses at that tender age.
I’ll credit Family Literacy Day.
